Help Protect Winter Animals as Seen in BBC’s Frozen Planet
Did anyone else catch the magical ‘Frozen Planet’ last night on the BBC? What an amazing documentary, it must take literally years to film, and not exactly in the best weather! The opening scene of the polar bear swimming alone was truly enchanting, and in high definition it almost felt like you were there.
I really like the fact that the programme makers let you see how different elements of the show are filmed, because I spend most of my time whilst watching saying ‘How did they do that?’, it must be quite infuriating for whoever is watching it with me! The filming of the killer whales was quite astounding, they had to get so close to they could almost touch them, probably not advisable. You would have to have nerves of steel to film the mother Polar Bear running towards you too, as with two young mouths to feed I’m sure the cameramen looked like a tasty snack.
The Penguins were my personal favourite, and the way they propel themselves out of the water and land on their feet is amazing, I laughed every time, though you really felt for them when their babies were attacked. But that’s also the great thing about the show, as it gives an unblinkered insight into the reality of nature, both the beauty and the beast.
The best example of this (and also with a Hollywood ending) saw two white wolves separate an Oxen calf from it’s herd and attack it, with plans to feed it to their young family who were hungrily waiting at their den. Upon separation, the rest of the Oxen herd retaliated and managed to win back the calf, then surrounded it from further attacks by creating a woolly wall with spiked horns for protection. Truly amazing scenes, imagine being one of the crew who filmed it!
Can’t wait for the next episode which will feature Autumn on the Frozen Planet, it truly is some of the best television you will ever see, and I’m pretty sure you’ll be as gripped as I have been by what our beautiful planet has to offer.
